CV

Born in Mexico, Rubén Valdez studied architecture at the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio (MSc AAM 2011) and visual arts at the École Cantonale d’art de Lausanne (MAV ÉCAL 2015). He is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Since 2011, he has developed a practice in architecture, contemporary art, teaching, and publishing between Switzerland and Mexico, often in partnership with other architects, artists, designers and editors.

As an architect, he has designed and built a number of projects that range from private houses, a hotel, an art gallery and several scenographies. Since his experience at ÉCAL, he has further developed his practice to be closely related to contemporary art, participating in a number of exhibitions and art pieces throughout Europe and Mexico.

He is a member of the editorial board of CARTHA magazine since 2015, with whom he has developed an online archive of critical thinking around architecture and society, published three books and participated in numerous exhibitions and conferences such as the Lisbon Triennale 2016 and the Venice Biennale 2021.

In 2016 he joined the Atelier de la Conception de l’Espace at EPFL, where he was a first year studio director from 2016 to 2018 and has been Head of Design Research since 2017.
