Born in Mexico, Rubén Valdez studied architecture at the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio (MSc AAM 2011) and visual arts at the École Cantonale d’art de Lausanne (MAV ÉCAL 2015). He is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

He has been developing, since 2011 a practice in architecture, contemporary art, teaching and publishing, in Switzerland and Mexico; often in collaboration with other architects, artists, designers and publishers. As an architect, he has designed and realized projects of various natures and scales: scenography, art gallery, individual houses and hotel among others.

He is a member of the editorial board of CARTHA magazine which, since 2015, has been developing an online archive of critical thinking around architecture and has resulted in the publication of several books and participation in numerous exhibitions and conferences, such as the Lisbon Triennial and the Venice Biennale in 2016.

In 2016 he joined the Atelier de la Conception de l’Espace at EPFL, where he was first-year studio director, until 2018. Since 2017, he leads the Design Research department within ALICE, where he coordinates several experimental projects that range from object to urban scale.

He recently won the 1st prize in the idea competition for Plateforme 10, a new contemporary art hall and public space in the museum pole of Lausanne.
